Surgery at Gwinnett Medical Center

At Gwinnett Medical Center, we are committed to providing you with the highest quality of care and a positive surgical experience. Your healthcare team will explain what is happening, take care of your needs and answer all of your questions.

Preoperative Area

After arriving at the hospital, we will ask you to change into a hospital gown. Your nurse will answer all of your questions and take good care of you.

To prepare you for your surgery, we will:

  • Mark your surgery site.
  • Place a hospital bracelet on your wrist.
  • Start an intravenous line (IV) so we can give you fluids and medication.
  • Scrub your surgical site with a special cleanser to prevent infection.
  • For leg surgery, we will put an elastic stocking on your non-operative leg to prevent blood clots.

Operating Room

In the operating room, we provide blankets to keep you warm and anesthesia to put you in a sleep-like state to make sure you do not feel any pain during the surgery.

Recovery Room

After surgery, we take you to the recovery room. Your nurse will watch you closely and give you medicine for pain. Your surgeon may order you some of the following special equipment:

  • Oxygen to help you breathe.
  • Urinary catheter to drain your bladder of urine.
  • Ice packs to decrease swelling and reduce pain.
  • Drainage tube to remove fluid and reduce swelling.
  • Foot pumps to prevent blood clots.

At Gwinnett Medical Center, we are committed to preparing you for what to expect before, during and after your surgery.
