Reverse Total Shoulder

Another type of shoulder replacement is called reverse total shoulder replacement. This surgery is used for people who:

  • Have a completely torn rotator cuff
  • Suffer from the effects of severe arthritis
  • Experienced a failed previous shoulder replacement surgery

For some patients, a conventional total shoulder replacement leaves them with chronic joint pain. They may also be unable to lift their arm past 90 degrees and away from the side. This is why reverse total shoulder replacement was developed.

How Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement Works

The surgery is so named because a metal ball is attached to the shoulder bone and a plastic socket is attached to the upper arm bone. This allows patients to use their deltoid muscle instead of their torn rotator cuff to lift their arm.
